Unit 8 When is your birthday?

Teaching objectives
By the end of the period, the students will be able to
1. talk about dates by using ordinal numbers;
2. grasp the rules of formation, pronunciation and abbreviation of ordinal numbers;
3. use When questions to ask others’ birthdays and answer;
4. grasp the usage of the preposition in and on in the expression of time;

Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warm-up(序曲)
T: When’s your birthday? Tell me now. When’s your birthday? I’ll show you how. Let’s sing a song! Use your body language. Tell me when your birthday is?

T: Good job. What’s the song about?
Ss: Birthdays and months.
T: How many months are there in a year?
Ss: 12 months.
T: What are they?
Ss: January, February...December.
T: Let’s play a reaction game about them. Ready! Go! (Play a game.)
【Purpose】The teacher can catch the students’ attention quickly and make them concentrate on class by singing a song. The students can generate ideas and words on the topic of months and ordinal numbers, which will also save the teacher’s time to help the students review the words they’ve learned in this unit. The students can use the words and phrases, so this step lays the foundation for their grammar.
【设计意图】课堂的开始,就像一场戏的序曲一样,幕布一打开,就要使学生快速入戏,使他们融入到老师设置的教学情境当中。教师用唱歌的方式能快速抓住学生的注意力,也复习了本单元的知识点月份和序数词。学生到后面就能用这个步骤生成的单词和词组,有利于后面语法活动的展开。

【Purpose】Through the group discussion, the students can share ideas with each other, and sum up the rules of formation of ordinal numbers. This also lays the foundation of the usage of ordinal numbers. One minute challenge and grammar exercises enable students to practice when questions and to grasp the usage of the preposition in and on in the expression of dates.
【设计意图】这一步相当于戏剧里面故事的展开。学生通过小组讨论,能互相交换观点意见,还可以总结序数词形成规律,这也为接下来序数词的使用打下了夯实的基础。1分钟挑战和语法练习既练习了when引导的特殊疑问句又掌握了介词in和on表时间的用法。
Step 3 Suspense (悬念)
T: All these sentences are about birthday. You know, my birthday is important to me. I have many important days. Can you guess what they are about?

【Purpose】In this step, the students have already talked a lot about their birthdays, and sentence patterns have been reviewed. By guessing the teacher's important days, students can produce their thoughts on the important days with sufficient sentence accumulation and repeated practice.
【设计意图】戏剧或者故事的悬念观众最期待。课堂里学生的产出最终怎么样,也是一个悬念。学生们通过猜测老师重要的日子,在充足的句子积累和反复的练习下,可以产生他们对重要日子的想法。
Step 4 Climax (高潮)
T: You know my important days. I want to know your important days. Which days are important to you? And why?

T: Work in groups, write important days and reasons on the paper, then show on the stage. Here are the rules. 3 minutes for you.
【Purpose】In this step, the students have already learned how to talk about their important days. It is a prime time to arrange students to talk about important days which give them a chance to use they have learned today.
【设计意图】戏剧的高潮部分最吸引人,是全剧的重头戏。这节课的产出部分,无疑是这节课的亮点和重点。通过小组活动,谈论重要的日子用到了今天所学的知识。
Step 5 Ending (结局)
1. Summary
Review what we’ve learned today. Read aloud good sentences.
2. Homework
Make a poster about your important days.
【Purpose】Let students learn to summarize the contents they’ve learned in class, which can cultivate their ability of learning. At the same time, the task that the students make a poster about your important days will enable them use and review what they have learned.
【设计意图】一堂课的结尾相当于一部戏的结局。编筐编篓,重在收口。让学生自主自己总结一节课所学的内容能培养学生自己的总结归纳能力。布置任务让学生制作重要日子的海报,既复习了所学知识,又活用了知识。
